Sarasota Sailing Squadron Weather Alert Protocol
Purpose:
The Weather Alert system ensures timely communication with all members regarding potential weather-related emergencies affecting the Squadron.
Weather Emergency Decision Process
With the approval of the Commodore (or their designee), the General Manager will issue an Alert Communication to notify all members. This alert will be:

Posted as Breaking News on the Squadron website.
Alerts will provide guidance on securing boats and property, emphasizing the uncertainty of weather forecasts and the possibility of further updates as conditions evolve.
Weather Alert Communication Plan
1. Initial Weather Alert – 7 Days Prior
🚨 Subject: Alert: Possible Hurricane Development – Stay Informed
📢 A tropical depression has formed with a high probability of developing into a hurricane. Current projections indicate it may approach Sarasota within 7–8 days. Please stay tuned for updates and begin preliminary preparations to secure your boats and belongings. Further communication will follow as the situation evolves.
2. Follow-Up Updates – Ongoing as Storm Develops
Timing: Daily updates (adjust frequency based on storm progression).
Content: Updated forecasts, changes in timing or pathway, and preparation reminders.

🌪️ As of today, [Date], Tropical Storm [Name] has intensified and is projected to become a hurricane. Its pathway includes the Sarasota area, with possible landfall in [X days]. 3. Critical Warning – 5 to 4 Days Before Impact
Timing: When the hurricane poses a direct threat and is expected within 5 days.
Content: Immediate action required to minimize damage and ensure safety.

🚧 Actions Required:
✅ Remove boats from the property if possible.
✅ Secure all loose items (flags, sails, rigging, and personal belongings).
✅ Complete final boat tie-downs by [deadline].
✅ Expect Clubhouse and facility closures from [date/time].
✅ Monitor local evacuation orders and prioritize safety.
🌊 Storm Surge & Wind Alert: If you can relocate your boat to a secure location, please do so. We anticipate significant storm surge and extremely high winds.
🛑 Reminder: Each member is responsible for any weather-related damage to their boat and any damage their boat may cause to others' property.
